Little Things for Which I am Thankful

Oh my God, thank GOD it’s Friday, people. I am just exhausted this week. Could be the working of many jobs has caught up to me, or the 90-some degree heat we had this week, or the walking of my bike yesterday in the heat when it got a flat tire, or the fact that I have been leading tours to new LLM students all week, but I’m definitely a tired lady right now. But it’s been a good week too.

1. I paid $300 on my student loan and was rewarded with seeing that damn bastard LAL Loan balance go below $15K. Whooppee – that’s about $6K paid down on it in 11 months. While that may not seem like a lot, I’ve paid off a total of about $10K in debt over that time period while also saving a fair amount. When I add the two numbers together, it makes me really happy. It tells me that I am capable of really cutting my expenses and prioritizing, especially when the situation warrants it.

2. You read above that I got a flat tire on my bike this week. Yep, that kinda (ok, it really) sucked. It was really hot out I was not super close to a bus stop at the time. But I am thankful that (a) it was not out of the realm of reason to walk to a bus stop and (2) the fact that a bus was even an option. In a lot of other cities, I would have been royally screwed, and had to walk the bike for miles.  Also, something told me before I left to not worry about the extra weight that a bottle of water would give me – just to go ahead and fill it up. Thankfully I listened to my gut!

3. I’ve gained some new readers this week, and it’s definitely making me feel like I’m more and more part of a community out there. A community of people who have decided that maybe the “expected” way of life isn’t necessarily the only course you can choose. It helps to keep this in mind as you explain to others who know you in your regular “sticks and bricks” life that don’t quite necessarily grasp why living in any other way might be desirable. Not that I care what others think, mind you – if they don’t like the idea of living in a motorhome or think it’s “trashy” – well, they’re entitled to their opinion. Doesn’t mean I have to listen to it or allow it to have any effect on me. (It’s so freeing when you finally don’t care what others think!)

4. There have been a few very hot days this week but the others have been, well, just amazing. Very low humidity and such gorgeous breezes. I just sat down by the reservoir with Baby O on my lap yesterday and thought of how lucky I was to be able to enjoy it.  And, of course, she brought smiles to the faces of many people walking by. One person even said “thank you!” to me.

5. My Bonkers is feeling a thousand times better this week. Took him back to the animal hospital this week so a doctor of internal medicine could check him out, and they retested him for anemia. Luckily, the anemia he had last week seemed to be gone – his body had just slowed down making red blood cells while it was fighting everything else going on.

Not sure why, but I’m not questioning it but I woke up this morning in a really good mood, even though I’m working on the day before a long holiday weekend and am working this Sunday. Some people might hate to work, and I do love my free time, but every day I work now, I just keep telling myself, it’s money I can set aside for the future. For my new life, when I likely won’t make anything close to what I am making now, but will be more free to follow my heart. I can’t wait!  In the meantime, I will just be very envious of my older brother and sister in law – check out their blog – It’s Not a Slow Car, It’s a Fast House – they are going to be living in their van, Alta, starting in 35 days!!

By the way, in case you are curious – I’m going to be shopping for a scooter this weekend, and this is one of my possible choices (isn’t she pretty??!!):

Little Things for Which I am Thankful

As you can tell from my lack of posting this week, it’s been another busy one! So, as you can imagine, TGIF!!!

Tookie and Po (a perfect pair)
Tookie and Po (a perfect pair)

1. I am thankful that as soon as I decided to put less into my motor home savings account, I started getting even more hours from the gym! Those hours’ pay automatically go into that account, so I feel like I haven’t really lost ground, while at the same time, gaining ground on my debt. (For the next paycheck, it’s more than what would have normally gone in from my full time job!!)

I’ve also taken on a temporary roomie and her mom is paying rent to me for her, so that’s been a help as well. She’s also been a big help where the animals are concerned, and it’s nice to have someone around to talk to for a change, so it’s all good.

2. I got the picture you see above this week. The cat in the photo was a foster cat of mine for many, many months due to his “unique”  litter box habits, or so we thought. Turns out, he just wanted to be able to go outside! Tookie is his name, and although he hated cats, he loves dogs! And Po, the very large dog you see in the photo, absolutely loves him! I just love this photo and the way it looks like Po is protecting Tookie while at the same time, sharing in whatever cool thing that they are looking at! I am grateful to his forever mom for sending me photos of him and keeping me updated on his antics. She said that as soon as they started letting him go outside, no more accidents. And he never strays far from the house, and doesn’t mind occasionally being “herded” back to the house by Po!  (As of this Sunday, he will be with his new and forever family for a year!!!!!)

3. This week was graduation for the students at my school. That means we get our school back!!! 😉  And, the students at the college near me also graduated last week, so we get our neighborhood back!!  (Mind you, they are not all horrible but it does make the place a bit quieter.)

4.  I took the final exam for my online physiology and anatomy class. While I don’t feel like I retained a ton from the class, I got a 92! So it counts, woohoo!  And the good thing is, I have the materials from the class to refer to in the future whenever I need them. (And honestly, not all of the class was relevant to what I will be doing for a new career, so it was good that I didn’t have to memorize a lot of stuff to then just later on dump out of the memory bank.)

5. My motorhome/tiny home land fund just hit another milestone!!! Woohoo!! It’s funny how once you set your mind to a goal, you don’t have the same problem saving money as you used to when you didn’t have a specific purpose in my mind for everything you spend. Now, when I spend money, I literally think to myself, “is this worth however long it will delay my motorhome dream coming true?”

6.  While I am not happy or thankful that my oldest kitty, Bonkers, had to go to the vet this week for diarrhea and throwing up, and the resulting $407 bill, I am grateful that I have finally gotten to that place in my life where a bill like that doesn’t throw me into a tizzy and make me wonder, how is everything going to get paid this month?  While I did use my CareCredit card for the first time, I’m able to pay it off this afternoon. And that card can only be used for medical expenses for myself or my animals. It’s the only reason I have it. Any of you who have pets know how it feels when they don’t feel good and they can’t tell you why. It’s scary.  He seems to be feeling at least a bit better, and my roomie got him to take his pill yesterday by grinding it into a pulp and then mixing it into his food.  We can’t get him to eat much of the W/D food but he’s been eating some of the other type that I have around, so it’s better than nothing.

7. One last thing!! I don’t know how I didn’t know this before but my CES certification exam is open-book and can be taken at home. I am so thrilled about this. Although it’s 100 questions that must be completed in 90 minutes or less, and that’s not super easy, I am extremely grateful that I don’t have to memorize absolutely everything. I will make sure I know the material thoroughly, of course, but at my age, it’s been harder to memorize things like I did when studying for the Bar Exam.

It’s just a bit after 6:30 a.m. here and this post is done and in the books! And I’ve already done an hour’s worth of work! Woohoo!

Little Things for Which I am Thankful

Looks like I can just get this post in under the wire for Friday! Sorry, been a bit hectic today.

1. My Tiny House/Land Fund is officially over $1K!  YAY. You know what this means? Now, it gets real. When I get paid from my freelance work (which she already approved the invoice), I plan on bringing that number up by a lot!! Something about looking at that account and seeing it grow…it just helps me to keep on keeping on. Read more

Little Things for Which I am Thankful

Life is so hard in my house if you have fur and four legs.
Life is so hard in my house if you have fur and four legs.

It’s Friday and you know what that means! Other than TGIF, that is….

  1. I have a cold. Now, you’re probably wondering why in the hell that would make me thankful. Well, my brother posted on facebook yesterday that he has the flu. I’m so thankful I don’t have that.  It’s all relative, folks.
  2. Because I have a cold, I’ve got that sexy raspy voice thing going on… oh…yeah…..
  3. I’ve been able to catch up on some of my feedly feeds this week and they have really inspired me to keep going on this downsizing/getting out of debt path. They really remind me that “yes, it REALLY is ok if you don’t decide to live along the lines of the status quo. Who cares if someone will think your new living situation might be kind of strange in a few years? As long as you’re happy, then do it!” (I mean, hell, people already think I’m weird for having 5 cats.)
  4. I’ve come across a few new blogs this week that I really, really like. They’ll be added to my blogroll very soon!
  5. I am making my first “extra principal” payment on my private student loans today for the first time IN YEARS!! YES, YEARS!!!! With each extra payment, I just want to yell out “suck it, AES!” 🙂
  6. Going along with number 3 above, when my next monthly payment hits that account, it will bring my loan down to under 20K. WOW.
  7. Today was the first time I could make a transfer into my savings account instead of paying off a car loan or personal loan. My tiny house fund has almost $1K in it. I can’t wait to have it hit 4 digits. Then it gets REAL!
  8. As always, I am thankful for my furry ones. You have no idea how happy they make me when I see them looking all contented and sleepy. Like my Max, above.
