Little Things for Which I’m Thankful

My baby girl, Osito, enjoying a walk in the sun last weekend. 🙂

Once again, I’m so glad it’s Friday. You ever have those days where you wake up during the middle of the week, and you’re like “oh crap, it’s only Thursday??” That’s the experience I had yesterday morning! Anyway, on with my favorite post of every week! Read more

Survivalism vs. Minimalism – can you have both?

Can't wait to see the colors in the sky and the reflections on the water like this again. Spring, come to me!!
Can’t wait to see the colors in the sky and the reflections on the water like this again. Spring, come to me!!

This is a question I’ve been grappling with lately. Don’t ask me why – I’m not sure exactly what got me started on this. Maybe it was finding a few youtube videos by this guy, the MainePrepper, and realizing he’s not a complete nutbag who thinks that his views are the only possible views out there in the world, or maybe because I am the granddaughter of someone who lived through the Great Depression, and always had her “reserve” cabinet of food in her house, even in the early 2000s.

I definitely want to get rid of extra stuff in my life. But I also want to be prepared for emergencies or disasters, too. Thing is, my $ sources are not unlimited, and my space is somewhat limited too, living in an apartment. And my plan is to live in a small home/rv/manufactured home, etc., so it’s not like that space is going to get any bigger from what I have now… Read more

My boy, Sebastian <3 <3 <3
My boy, Sebastian

Hi folks, my apologies for the blog being silent this week. I’ve been really busy with the freelance research for that book I am working on. Sometimes I get really into the hunt for something and time just flies by.

  1. Tomorrow is the first of February. While that means it’s still winter, it means that the days are getting longer and that Spring will eventually return. Did my eyes deceive me or did it actually appear to be light around 5 p.m. this week??
  2. I am returning tomorrow to another self defense class known as Krav Maga, with my best friend. We had a ton of fun at the first one, and tomorrow they will use the “red suits” so it’ll be cool. We can practice in a way that allows us to use full-force or close-to-full-force so we can see how we might really react in certain situations. In other words, whether we are the type of women who yell or don’t yell. Can’t wait! (And yes, I pretty much think I’m one of those who will yell if the situation warrants it.)
  3. Got paid for my first invoice this week, allowing me to stock up on extra food for myself and the animals, as well as put some away in savings and pay my financial adviser for her annual fee so I don’t have to worry about it until next year!  As a bonus, I’m really interested in what I have been researching and the woman I am working is just, how do I put this, completely awesome?? She makes me feel so valued.
  4. I have had two training sessions so far with my friend who’s getting married in June. She said she was working through some of the exercises I gave her to do earlier this week and another trainer saw her and commented on how good her form was! That’s my girl!! So she told her about me and the other trainer said they are always looking for new trainers!
  5. Officially, I start working at my gym on Thursday nights as of Feb. 20th! YAY! (This would be extra awesome if it also means my monthly dues become free. Let’s hope!) It’s only 3 hours per week so far, but you never know, right? I will be training with the manager next week and as I get to know him, I will probably broach the subject of whether or not they are hiring trainers there, or what they look for. I just want to get a little bit more experience under my belt and also get a resume together that highlights my skills or experience, and tests/certifications passed.  So, yes, more studying in the near future for me!
  6. My nephew turned ten this past Saturday and I was able to share it with him!
  7. My friend’s essay on the Huffington Post keeps getting more and more press and more likes. I’m so happy for her.  She has published a lot with them in a short time, so here’s the link to her bio which has links to all of her articles. She is an extremely strong writer and any time reading her words is time well spent.
  8. This weekend, our weather is forecasted to turn, well, comparatively tropical. As in close to 50 degrees. Break out the bikinis!

I hope you will all have a great weekend and I’ll try to write more next week!

Little Things for Which I am Thankful

Looks like I can just get this post in under the wire for Friday! Sorry, been a bit hectic today.

1. My Tiny House/Land Fund is officially over $1K!  YAY. You know what this means? Now, it gets real. When I get paid from my freelance work (which she already approved the invoice), I plan on bringing that number up by a lot!! Something about looking at that account and seeing it grow…it just helps me to keep on keeping on. Read more

Notes to my Younger Self

blueskyI read a great book by Susannah Conway, titled This I Know: Notes on Unraveling the Heart. In it, she mentions writing notes to her younger self, and older self, and it got me to thinking of what I would write to my younger self. Susannah’s writing is so genuine, and I found myself bookmarking so many pages on my Kindle, it was kind of like “why don’t I just bookmark every single page while I’m at it?”

So, here goes nothing…

Dear Terri,

You’re only 16, and today’s the day you decided “you know everything there is to know about the world, and no one can tell you otherwise.” Oh….you simply have no idea.

When your mom tells you to stop eating that cookie or you’re going to get fat, don’t let it influence how you eat for the next few years. Don’t go days without eating. It’s not healthy. And she probably didn’t realize how much that one statement was going to have on you and your self image. She was just having a bad day.

Your sister isn’t perfect, she’s just older than you are. Believe me when I tell you, she has her own self-doubts to deal with.

You don’t have to wear a suit to be successful. You might think that only people who wear business attire are successful in this world, but you would be wrong. And when your mom goes over financial aid forms for law school with you and asks, in a serious tone, “do you realize it will cost you $90,000 to attend this one school?” You need to really think about the answer. Don’t just assume you will be making all the big bucks when you’re done. In fact, don’t even assume you will stay in that field for as long as it took you to earn that degree. Because you won’t. And you will search for that perfect career for a long time.  “Older You” is still working on it.

You’re 16, and you think your one true love just broke up with you this year and that life is now over. You would be partly correct. He may have been your one true love, or at least your first true love, but life will go on.

When you get to be in your twenties and it seems like everyone else has their act together and is getting married, and you’re being left behind, just know you’re not. The twenties suck, plain and simple. You don’t have a clue as to who you are, what you want to be, how you want to live your life.

Aside from your divorce, (oops, should I not have said that? Bet you’re wondering who that guy will be, huh?) your thirties will be awesome compared to the suck-ass twenties. Unfortunately, your body will change so that you won’t be able to drink everything you want to like you did in law school without gaining weight from it, but you will finally get a sense of who you are. And you’ll start to care less about what others think of you. That is, until you get divorced anyway, and then you worry about being alone for the rest of your life, and will anyone ever love you again? They will, but not until you stop hating and blaming yourself for everything that went wrong. You weren’t married to yourself, so don’t put it all on your shoulders.

When you’re nearing 40, don’t dread it. Embrace it. And when the thought enters your mind to work out like a crazy person so that you get into the best shape of your life, go for it. Because you will. And because you are strong.  Remember that, because many times in your life, you may have your doubts about that.

Don’t try to act younger, just be yourself. You can go after those young hotties if you want, but just know that they are at a much different stage in their life as you and they won’t be able to handle you, for sure. It will be flattering, of course, but there won’t be any substance there, and don’t try to see something that simply doesn’t exist.

When you hit 40, you might fall in love with someone very different from you. You’ll maybe lose yourself in his dreams there for a little bit, but don’t lose yourself and what your heart has always yearned for.  A good relationship involves compromise from both of you.  When it ends, hold onto the good moments and work through those feelings of loss and loneliness. Because you will feel them, that is for sure. But, remember that you’re not broken.  Remember that your heart has always healed in the past and it will do so again.

When someone tells you that some people think of them as a jerk, believe them and be on the lookout for signs that they may be that way toward you.

Don’t ever attempt to change people.  Know that it takes so much more energy to hate than to be indifferent. Know that you don’t have to live a life just like everyone else – it’s ok to be different. Recognize true friends when you see them in front of you – if you feel you have to act a certain way when around someone and can’t always be yourself, that’s probably not a true friend.

Live each day to the fullest. Because you never know if one day, you might step out off the curb and get run over by a bus. Or, you might live until you’re in your nineties. I’m betting on you living for a very long time.

p.s. You are NOT the crazy cat lady until you have 10 cats. 🙂

Getting Rid of my Debt, Part 10: You win some and you lose some

Some days, it's better to just go back to sleep like my boys.
Some days, it’s better to just go back to sleep like my boys.

First, the bad news. Last week I was so tired on Thursday night, I fell asleep before I could make a transfer of funds from my online savings account to my regular checking account. This started a domino effect which just pisses me off, both at Bank of America and at myself.  Even though this is really embarrassing for me to talk about, I promised to be “real” on here so I’m not going to only tell you about good stuff all the time.  Read more

Little Things for Which I am Thankful

fall leavesThis has become my favorite post to write. It keeps me grounded in the here and now which is important, considering how much time I spend thinking about the future — my future job as a trainer (and who knows what else? maybe a writer? or animal rescuer?), my future house, my animals that will still be with me with I move and any new ones that may come along and bless me in this life.

Keeping myself grounded in the present, I am so thankful for the people that have come into my life these past three and a half years. If I had stayed married, I think my world would have remained small, and I wouldn’t have realized so many passions as I now feel in my heart and I wouldn’t have been able to learn from others like I have. My friends, both in real life and those with whom I talk online (and plan to meet in the future, you know who you are!) teach me so much every day. I am feeling very blessed this morning and my list comes from a place of abundance.  Read more

A different kind of post….

In case you are wondering what I look like dressed as a normal person, not in biking/workout clothes! :-)
In case you are wondering what I look like dressed as a normal person, not in biking/workout clothes! 🙂

Ugh.  I don’t normally write on this topic and I don’t even know how to title this post so I’m just going to start writing and let it come to me. So, here it is – dating. Read more

Getting Rid of my Debt, Part 9: Changing Cell Phone Carriers

Osito!
Just one reason I am working hard to get out of debt. So I can save more like my baby girl, Osito.

If you know me in real life, you know that I can sometimes be what they call, ahem, “decision-impaired.” 🙂 Before I make a decision about something, I feel like I have to research every option, you know, leave NO stone unturned! It might be because of my current full-time occupation of being a law librarian, and having a wealth of resources at my disposal every day. I feel like I need to keep looking for things until I find out definitively that I have found all that is to be found. Read more

Life is so hard in my house if you have fur and four legs.
Life is so hard in my house if you have fur and four legs.

It’s Friday and you know what that means! Other than TGIF, that is….

  1. I have a cold. Now, you’re probably wondering why in the hell that would make me thankful. Well, my brother posted on facebook yesterday that he has the flu. I’m so thankful I don’t have that.  It’s all relative, folks.
  2. Because I have a cold, I’ve got that sexy raspy voice thing going on… oh…yeah…..
  3. I’ve been able to catch up on some of my feedly feeds this week and they have really inspired me to keep going on this downsizing/getting out of debt path. They really remind me that “yes, it REALLY is ok if you don’t decide to live along the lines of the status quo. Who cares if someone will think your new living situation might be kind of strange in a few years? As long as you’re happy, then do it!” (I mean, hell, people already think I’m weird for having 5 cats.)
  4. I’ve come across a few new blogs this week that I really, really like. They’ll be added to my blogroll very soon!
  5. I am making my first “extra principal” payment on my private student loans today for the first time IN YEARS!! YES, YEARS!!!! With each extra payment, I just want to yell out “suck it, AES!” 🙂
  6. Going along with number 3 above, when my next monthly payment hits that account, it will bring my loan down to under 20K. WOW.
  7. Today was the first time I could make a transfer into my savings account instead of paying off a car loan or personal loan. My tiny house fund has almost $1K in it. I can’t wait to have it hit 4 digits. Then it gets REAL!
  8. As always, I am thankful for my furry ones. You have no idea how happy they make me when I see them looking all contented and sleepy. Like my Max, above.
